First World War Commemoration at St. Tudno’s, November 2018

editor : November 3, 2018 7:04 pm : Latest, TudnosForthcoming

To commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War a self-guided trail has been established in St. Tudno’s Churchyard on the Great Orme (please note this does not include the adjacent Great Orme Cemetery).  The trail leads visitors around the graves of, and memorials to, those who fell in the Great War or who died subsequently of their wounds.  For November, the graves are marked with red ribbons and there is an accompanying display in the church, which will be open every day.  The display is based on biographies of those commemorated in the churchyard, as researched for the parish website’s Great War Project, and includes photographs where possible.  Also remembered is a VAD Nurse who served in Llandudno throughout the war but who died in the influenza epidemic shortly before armistice, an example of the often unrecorded work of non-combatants.  Life during the War is illustrated by one panel of the display which features silhouettes of war scenes by Llandudno’s silhouette artist Captain Harry Lawrence Oakley, whose ashes are interred in the churchyard.
