Christingle Service

Christingle service

The Christingle Service was on Tuesday 16 December at 6.00 pm.

Christus Natus Est
Over the years, we have amassed a collection of almost 50 nativity scenes – large and small – from our travels both near to and far from home.  We thought that others might like to see these charming (and sometimes very amusing) scenes, so we planned an early start to Christmas with a get-together on Sunday 7th December to view these scenes and enjoy some mulled wine and mince pies.  (We turned down one nativity we saw in the ‘wild west’ of the USA, where every character, including Jesus, was a grizzly bear!!)

As our minds turn to the Holy Land, we thought it would be good to raise money for a charity based there so there was a collection for Children of Peace.  This is a nonpartisan, multifaith charity dedicated to building friendship, trust and reconciliation between Israeli and Palestinian children, aged 7 – 17, and their communities.  Their projects respect the traditions, values and customs of both communities.  The charity has an office in London and has the support of the Prime Minister.

Church involvement in the Christmas Parade
For the first time this year the churches, through Cytûn, were invited by Llandudno Town Council to take part in the Town Christmas Parade on Saturday 6th December.  Children from the member churches took part, forming a nativity scene.

A Guest Preacher
On Sunday November 16th at the Sung Eucharist, we welcomed Mrs Rebecca Colpus as our preacher. Mrs Colpus, who is a Church in Wales Reader, preached on behalf of the Torch Trust, an organization which provides Christian literature and resources to blind and partially sighted people.

Parish Christmas Fair
This took place on Saturday 15 November.  Parishioners and visitors enjoyed the refreshments, stalls, competitions and raffle, while the handbell ringers played seasonal tunes outside the church.

 Cytûn Conference on Climate Change
This very special Conference, on Wednesday November 12th in Llandudno Town Hall, continued to explore the theme of last year’s conference – the issue of climate change seen from a Christian perspective. We were very privileged to have as our principle speaker Sir John Houghton FRS CBE, Co-chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Sir John is an eminent scientist who has held various important posts including professor in atmospheric physics at the University of Oxford and chief executive at the Met Office. He speaks from a Christian perspective and is a founder member of the International Society for Science and Religion.  The Conference was very well attended and Sir John's presentation was followed by a question session.  A report on the conference can be found in the Parish Magazine for December 2008.

Remembrance Sunday: 9 November
The Civic Service began at 9.45 am instead of 10 am in order to give those who were marching more time to get to the Cenotaph for the silence.  The service was well attended by members of the armed forces and uniform groups, including Cadets and members of the Scout and Guide Associations.  Members of Llandudno Town Council were also present and the lesson was read by the Mayor.  Our own parish service started at 10.55 am and took the form of the Act of Remembrance followed by a said Eucharist with hymns.  The names of all those on the memorial plaques in the church were read out during the parish service.  Anyone wishing to study these plaques can find them in the Memorial Chapel

Llandudno Festival Week
I want to tell you about the concerts we arranged for the Llandudno Festival week which started on Wednesday 29th October and finished with a performance of the famous Petite Messe Solonnelle by Rossini which I conducted at St. John’s Methodist Church on Saturday November 1st.  There wasalso be a string orchestra concert, a violin and piano recital and a cello and piano recital.  On the Friday evening I gave an organ recital at Holy Trinity.

I am hoping that the organ CD which I made some time ago will be available for sale.  It has been a long time in production but is now being printed and should be with us in the near future.  I am also preparing the choir for a CD which I hope will be recorded in the early new year.  This will contain music for the main festivals of the year.

Coffee Morning
On Wednesday 15 October the retired clergy and their wives held a special coffee morning in aid of St. Luke's Hospital for the Clergy.  The hospital is up and running after its refurbishment.  The two operating theatres are well used and a wider range of treatment is now available.  The cost of providing this treatments funded entirely by voluntary contributions and over one hundred and fifty consultants give their spare time entirely free.  The hospital is situated in central London and provides treatment for clergy and their families, active or retired or nonstipendiary.

Harvest Festiva
l
Harvest Festival was celebrated on Sunday 5 October and collections for USPG were made at the services.  The main celebration was a Family Eucharist at 10.30 am and included singing, prayers, readings and presentations by the Sunday School and TRYGS Youth Group.  The service was followed by a bring-and-share lunch in the church hall.

Harvest Festival produce       Harvest Festival flowers
The Sunday School made an arrangement of produce in front of the altar and the flower arrangements included fruit and vegetables.

Concert by the St Petersburg Blagovest Ensemble
On Monday 15th September at 8.00 p.m. we expected to host a concert by the St. Petersburg Blagovest Ensemble. The title of the ensemble 'Blagovest' means 'good news' and the group would have sung 40 minutes of Orthodox church music and after the interval another 40 minutes of Russian folk music.
We regret that the concert was cancelled, as the choir members were unable to obtain visas to travel from Russia.

Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham

A group from North Wales made a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham from July 21st – 24th.  This was an expansion of the Holyhead pilgrimage which has taken place for many years.  It was organized jointly by myself, Fr. Clive Hillman, Vicar of Betws y Coed, and Glenys Samson from Holyhead.    Fr. John

Concerts in July
On Monday 28 July a concert was given by the New Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra – this orchestra of young musicians has played at Holy Trinity on a number of occasions in recent years and again provided an excellent concert.

On Thursday 10 July a concert should have been given by The Century Men a choir of 75 men from the USA. These are all professional musicians who are directors of music in Baptist churches across America. They should have been singing the kind of music they would sing in worship services in their churches.  This turned out to be a non-event as:
WE WERE INFORMED ON THURSDAY 10 JULY THAT THE CENTURY MEN WOULD NOT BE PERFORMING THIS CONCERT IN LLANDUDNO.  THE CHOIR HAD DOULBLE-BOOKED AND DID NOT INFORM US UNTIL THAT AFTERNOON THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE APPEARING IN LLANDUDNO.  WE APOLOGISE FOR THE CONFUSION (WHICH WAS NOT OF OUR MAKING) AND FOR ANY DISAPPOINTMENT CAUSED.

Coffee Morning for Air Ambulance
On Saturday 12 July the Parish Fellowship held a coffee morning in aid of the Air Ambulance.  The coffee morning was extended to afternoon tea as well and raised more than £360 for this good cause.  Regular coffee mornings and afternoon teas are also held in the church hall.

St. Benedict’s Day
Once again Richard and I, as Benedictine Oblates, celebrated St. Benedict’s day on Friday July 11th. We said three monastic offices during the day: Lauds (Morning Prayer) at 8.30 am, Mid-day Office which will be combined with a Eucharist at 11.00 am. and Vespers (Evening Prayer) at 5.00 pm. Vespers was in the beautiful setting of St. Tudno's, while the other services were at Holy Trinity.
Fr. John

Hymnody and Harmony
On Friday 27 - Saturday 28 June there was a flower festival in Holy Trinity Church. Harmony referred to the blending of colours in the many flower arrangements, which were be based on hynms.  Hymnody referred to the fact that there was an organist available to play people's favourite hymns on request (for a small donation) as went around the church.  Refreshments were available and our Vicar, Revd Jane Allen, said “This was another happy occasion and an opportunity to praise God through flowers and music”.  A selection of the arrangements is shown here and there is another photograph on the Sunday School page, showing the children's arrangement.

Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Lleyn Peninsula and Bardsey (Ynys Enlli)

A coach full of parishioners joined the Diocese of Bangor Pilgrimage to the Lleyn Peninsula and Bardsey on Saturday June 21st 2008.  The weather precluded the planned beach activities and Communion on the beach but could not dampen the pilgrims' enthusiasm.

Pilgrims at Rhoshirwaen  Pilgrims in the rain  More pilgrims

Rhoshirwaun Village Hall was full of pilgrims for the short service at the start of the pilgrimage walk and those who could not get in the hall joined in the service in the rain outside.  The pilgrims then walked three miles along quiet lanes to Aberdaron, while those who could not take part in the walk travelled to Aberdaron for a service there.

Pilgrims in Aberdaron  Pilgrims arrive at Aberdaron Church

The pilgrims arrived in Aberdaron village and those who could packed into St. Hywyn's Church for a service, while others took part outside the church.

Communion in the church  Fr John outside the church  Commumion outside the church

There was standing room only in the church for the Pilgrimage Communion Service and Fr. John joined those taking communion outside.

St. Hywyn's Church  Pilgrimage altar frontal

During the day the children took part in various activities, including making this lovely altar frontal for the Communion service, while pilgrims signed a book to send their their love, prayers and best wishes to Bishop Anthony in Ysbyty Gwynedd.  The Pilgrimage was Bishop Anthony's inspiration and everyone was saddened that he was unable to be with us on the day.

Pilgrimage cairn

After the Communion service, a Cairn of Hope was built on the beach between high and low tides, where the sea would wash over it.  Pilgrims each chose a pebble from the beach and added it to the cairn.

It had been hoped that a group of pilgrims would travel across to Ynys Enlli, representing all areas of the Diocese.  However, the sea was too rough to make the crossing.

News of the Mothers' Union in 2008

We started our first meeting of the new year on January 7th with a Eucharist Service led by the Reverend Jane Allen.

On January 21st we enjoyed our Wave of Prayer service when members lit a candle for our link diocese (Mumias, Matabeleland, Fianarantsoa, Katsina, Ogbomoso, Dublin and Glendalough, Lango, Bangor). This was followed with a quiz.  A photograph of the Wave of Prayer meeting can be seen in the March 2008 edition of the Parish Magazine

On February 4th, one of our members, Margaret, gave a very interesting talk on Pathways.

Some members attended the Mothers’ Union Diocesan Quiet Day at Noddfa Convent, Penmaenmawr on 23rd April and our annual outing was on Monday 28th April, when we visited Bridgemere Garden Centre near Nantwich.

During the summer, we met once a month for tea, biscuits and a chat and on 11 August we celebrated Mary Sumner Day with an afternoon tea.

Visitors are always most welcome to attend our meetings.

Barbara Y

On Tuesday 9 September, the Mothers’ Union held the first of its autumn season’s evening meetings.  Seventeen members attended.  We were all made very welcome and the tables were all laid out and many candles were lit down the table.  We began with a modern Eucharist in the Memorial Chapel with Jane Allen as the celebrant.  Each member in turn read a line from the Gathering. After the Confession, the Gospel reading was John 10:10-20.  The Intercessions and the Peace followed and then we used a Kenyan form of Eucharistic Prayer.  The consecrated bread and wine were passed around the table.  This reminded everyone of the Last Supper and the communion was wonderful.  The Thanksgiving and the Blessing followed; it was a very special evening the atmosphere was outstanding.  We then had our social get-together in the church hall.  Cakes and savouries with a glass of wine were provided.  Much laughter was shared and photos of grandchildren were passed around.  Jennifer Fossi then thanked Revd Jane for all the hard work that was put into a very successful evening.  A big thank you also goes to Angela, Barbara S and Marion H.

Please see the
Mothers' Union page for details of the current programme.

Events at St. Tudno's Church in 2008

Carols by Candlelight
The annual services of Carols by Candlelight were on Sunday 21 December at 3.00 pm and at 5.00 pm.  There were two services as the service is very popular but the church is quite small.  The Friends of St. Tudno's Church prepared the church with candles inside and lights outside and there are some more photographs on the Friends' page and on the St. Tudno's 2008 page.

Friends of St. Tudno's Church
On Saturday 7 June a special service was held at St. Tudno’s Church at which the new “Friends of St. Tudno’s Church” group was inaugurated by the Dean of Bangor, the Very Reverend Alun Hawkins.  The Rector of Llandudno, Revd Prebendary John Nice, invited anyone interested in the life, work and care of St. Tudno’s Church to join the “Friends” and founder members included people from the parish, other areas of North Wales, England and the Netherlands.  The service was followed by refreshments in the church grounds and the “Friends” look forward to welcoming many more members from near and far.

St. Tudno's Day
St Tudno's Day was on 5 June and was celebrated with two pilgrimage walks and a Eucharist.  The photograph below shows John, Dorothy and Fr. John, who made a pilgrimage walk from Holy Trinity to St. Tudno's before the Eucharist service.  They began with a short service at Holy Trinity, then walked up the Great Orme via Happy Valley, the ski slope and Pink Farm.  On the way they stopped to say some of the Psalms of Ascent, in the tradition of pilgrims in the past.   After the Eucharist service, they were joined  by some more members of the congregation to make a pilgrimage to St. Tudno's Well and photographs of this can be seen on the St. Tudno's 2008 page.  St. Tudno's Well is on private land and we would like to thank the landowners for kind permisson to visit the Well.
