George Frederick Burton

George Frederick Burton was born in 1895 in Buxton, Derbyshire to Frederick Samuel and Eliza Burton. His father was an upholsterer and in 1901, the family lived at Blackpool, Lancashire. The Census for Wales for 1911 records the family living at 3 Bryn Gwynt Terrace, Great Orme, Llandudno. George, aged 15, was described as an errand boy. Frederick Samuel Burton died in 1913.

On the outbreak of war, George joined the 6th (Anglesey and Caernarvonshire) Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (Territorial Force) at Caernarfon. His regimental number was 2644. At about that time, the Battalion split into the 1/6th for Imperial Service and the 2/6th for Home Service.

George volunteered for Imperial Service. The 1/6th Battalion moved on mobilisation to Conwy, and then to Northampton, Bedford and Cambridge. The Battalion sailed from Devonport on 19 July 1915 and landed as reinforcements at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on 9 August 1915.

George Burton was killed in action on the following day aged 20. He has no known grave.
